The Hippo Pool – Ngorongoro Crater

The Hippo Pool – Ngorongoro Crater

A visit to the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania wouldn’t be complete without visiting the hippo pool.

This is one of the only areas in the Crater, where you can get out of your vehicle. If there for a picnic breakfast, you can eat outside, basking in the early morning sun.

However, later in the day, the kites are known to be circling and so you’ll have to stay inside to eat. You can still get out for a wander though, just without food in hand.

When we arrived for our breakfast, we were greeted with the incredible sight of a ‘bloat’ of hippos just floating around in the pool.

It was amazing to see.

On our little wander around, we were also treated to the sight of a large herd of zebra and wildebeest, cautiously approaching the pool to drink.

There were also some colourful grouse on the shores of the lake. At least I think they are a type of grouse. Our guide did tell us what they were, but I didn’t write it down, so if you know what they are do let us know in the comments below.

We also enjoyed a bit of bird spotting. I was particularly taken by the superb starling.

It was a lovely little pitstop that allowed us the privilege of observing the hippos, while continuing to admire the landscape of the beautiful Ngorongoro crater.

And probably one the best views we’ve ever had for eat breakfast!

  1. Thank you for clearing that up for us! I was noting down some/most of the names of birds and animals as we were going round, but overlooked this one. Glad you appreciated the photos x
